Company Man
03:44
|
|||
I’m a company man
I’m a company man
The company is part of me
But I am part of the company
I’m a company man
I’m a company man
I go home to my wife and my kiddies three
But my soul is part of the company
I’m a company man
I’m a company man
The company won’t set you free
But it feeds the wife and the kiddies three
I’m a company man
I’m a company man
The company won’t set you free
But it feeds the wife and the kiddies three
I’m a company man
I’m a company man

Belinda
03:43
|
|||
Belinda was my friend
"What a lovely name," my mother said
Belinda squeezed my hand
"We'll be best friends until we're dead"
Belinda
Be linda
Belinda
Belinda spoke all night
Her cheeks were flushed, her eyes were bright
"The world's a shameful mess
But you and I, we'll put it right"
Belinda
Re-linda
Belinda
Her secretary took my call
"1615, a week on Friday"
Belinda's suit was smart
Her eyes were dull, her skin was grey
Belinda
De-linda
Belinda

Limitless Sea of Despair
05:17
|
|||
We came over the brow
Of the low, rocky hill
Before us lay
A limitless sea of despair
False birds in the trees
Dead stars in the firmament
Nothing that swims
In a limitless sea of despair
I glanced at my shoes
They were covered in apathy
Could they be cleansed
In a limitless sea of despair?
I went up to my knees
It was cold as the sepulchre
No ripples, no waves
In a limitless sea of despair
In a sea without bound
Every point os the same
The isle of the saints
The isle of the degraded
The island of hate
The island of selflessness
All just the same
In a limitless sea of despair

Fantasy
03:36
|
|||
I took the ancient path
Between the towers of sand
I came upon the portal to
The Dismal Land
The gatekeeper would not accept
My severed hand
It's two AM
There's rain on the window
Outside a woman weeps
The singing spires are crimson in
The rosy dawn
The angry priesthood lie in wait
Their daggers drawn
I speak the word, their anger melts
They turn to stone
Outside some boys
Are torturing
A tabby cat with knives and sticks
The demon queen torments her rivals
Through their dreams
Her functionaries orchestrate
The lurid scenes
Their nights are filled with flutterings
And moans and screams
The early morning's
Grainy light
Reveals the uncollected bins
He tugs his beard, he licks his lips
His scheme's in place
His golem army subjugates
The human race
He'll rule forever, clad in velveteen
And lace
They smash the door, they tie my hands
They send me to
A foreign land
Fantasy
You and me
Choose what's real

Davie and Joey
07:41
|
|||
In a layby far from town
Wee Joey and Davie met
Joey brought his XR2
Davie in his old Chevette
The night was warm, the air hung still
They sat silent before the lifeless sea
Davie lit a cigarette
“This is our only way to be free”
Can we do this thing?
Step outside the norm
Can we break these chains
Keeping us here since we were born?
The night was wild, the cloud hung low
All decent people cowered in bed
No-one saw the XR2
Hid behind the garden shed
No-one heard the woman’s screams
Or the way they suddenly went still
No-one saw the XR2
Heading homeward o’er the hill
Nearly all the town was there
Mourners crowded round the grave
The minister, though full of fear
Told the people to be brave
“Trust in God, He’ll see you through
Though some evil’s come amongst us here”
Davie’s face was stony grey
Joey shed a little tear
Can we do this thing?
…
Joey went from strength to strength
A string of shops across the land
The biggest house above the town
A pretty bride to take his hand
Lawyers, Provosts called him friend
Sought his help in carving up the town
The very few who crossed his path
Found their fortunes tumbling down
Davie went from strength to strength
But not in ways that you could see
Stepping through that darkest door
He found his only way to be free
Started spending time away
Bringing strangers home the locals feared
Didn’t have three friends in town
People all said, “Davie’s weird”
Can we do this thing?
…
A shabby bar in a distant town
Wee Joey and Davie met
Joey’s Jag was parked outside
Davie in his old Chevette
Joey said, “we’ve come so far
How I’d hate this all to slip away
You’re my friend, I know that’s true
But will there come a different day?”
Davie didn’t speak at first
Lit a fag and sipped his beer
Then he said, “I need to pee
Won’t be long, just you wait here”
Joey sat alone and still
Knew his men were waiting at the door
Felt the pain across his chest
Tumbled dead down to the floor
Can we do this thing?
…
The night was wild, the cloud hung low
When news of Davie’s passing came
Many, many years had passed
Few alive recalled his name
Heart ripped out by cruel femme
Scotland Yard and hellhounds on her trail
“Never should have left the town
Them as leave will always fail”
Can we do this thing?
…

Dreams and Ghosts
04:29
|
|||
I wake to find the world
Has changed exactly like my dream
But this is your world too
The only one you've ever seen
It all seems natural to you
You can't remember what the world was like before the change
I wish that I could stay awake so things would stay the same
I've lived so many histories and dreamed them all away
There's nothing left for me but dreams and ghosts and memories
No-one should have this power
To uncreate that which has been
But I never can control the strange unfolding of the dream
You don't know how much I envy you
You can't remember what the world was like before the change
I wish that I could stay awake so things would stay the same
I've lived so many histories and dreamed them all away
There's nothing left for me but dreams and ghosts and memories
Maybe we all died then
Lost in the forgotten fire
Then I woke remembering
The dream in which we all survived
I dreamed the world as I dreamed you
You can't remember what the world was like before the change
I wish that I could stay awake so things would stay the same
I've lived so many histories and dreamed them all away
There's nothing left for me but dreams and ghosts and memories

Never Be Happy Again
02:29
|
|||
I'll never be happy again
No I'll never be happy again
Took a look inside me
Didn't like what I see
Now I'll never be happy again
I'll never be cheerful again
No I'll never be cheerful again
The truth doesn't free
Despair has seized me
And I'll never be cheerful again
I'll never look forward again
No I'll never look forward again
I was living a lie
Now I'm waiting to die
And I'll never look forward again
I thought I'd be a force for good
I'd make the world a better place
Now I know my soul is black
I can only harm the human race
So I'll never be happy again
No I'll never be happy again
Morality
Forms no part of me
And I'll never be sorry again

The Evil Jelly
04:42
|
|||
They’re in the air, they’re in the ground
And they’re just waiting to be found
Alien spores, we don’t know the source
And to them we are just a resource
And to them we are just a resource
If you touch them, off they go
Their function is just to absorb you and grow
We can’t stop them, the only chance
Is to run away fast when they advance
Is to run away fast when they advance
The evil jelly, the evil jelly
People tell me, people tell me
How can we stop the evil jelly?
Guns are useless, bombs are too
If you blow it to bits, the bits come after you
So many taken and absorbed by the slime
The nuclear option’s just a matter of time.
The nuclear option’s just a matter of time.
The evil jelly, the evil jelly...
Chaos and horror, hue and cry
As the jelly grows and it multiplies
But worst of all, after it grows
Is when it shape shifts into people you know
Is when it shape shifts into people you know
The evil jelly, the evil jelly...

Your Insect
02:20
|
|||
How many legs has your insect got?
Is it six or eight or forty-three?
If it's less than ninety-nine
It's not enough for me, my boys
It's not enough for me
How does your insect kill its prey?
Does it bite or sting or suffocate?
If it doesn't use its forcipules
It's quite inadequate, my boys
It's quite inadequate
What made those marks across your chest?
Was it rats or wasps or velvet ants?
If it wasn't many venomous legs
You get no second glance, my boys
You get no second glance
What looks out behind your eyes?
Is it dog or bat or albatross?
If it isn't ancient centipede
Your insect's a dead loss, my boys
Your insect's a dead loss

It's Not
03:40
|
|||
It's not the things you did
They can be concealed
It's not the laws you broke
They can be repealed
They can be repealed
It's not the thoughts you had
They can be disproved
It's not the ones you told
They can be removed
They can be removed
It's not the damage done
It can be repaired
It's not the questions asked
When you're no longer there
When you're no longer there
It's not the trouble caused
Nor those you caused it to
It's just I broke my rule
Fooled myself and trusted you

Searching for Marie
03:57
|
|||
Under cover of dark
Flanked by two silent men
I walked from the jail
Guards averted their eyes
Gates were strangely unlocked
I breathed cold midnight air
What I do
They will pay for
What I know
They will pay for
Their scheme is nothing without me
We climbed into the car
Behind dark tinted glass
Left the jail far behind
Passed through run-down estates
Disused factory lots
A land in decline
What I do
They will pay for...
They said, "what do you need?"
I said "sixty-four cores
And a book by John Dee"
I was hid in plain sight
In a run-down estate
A tenement block all for me
What I do
They will pay for...
At the start we were three
Me, Frank, Marie
Our ambitions immense
New world, new sense
New perceptions, new tools
Rewrite the rules
But I was in jail
Frank's in the ground
Nobody knows
How Marie may be found
Their ambitions were small
Earthly riches and power
Easy for me to supply
I did what they asked
Left them nothing of worth
Stepped aside into the sky
What I do
They have paid for
What I know
They have paid for
Their scheme was nothing without me
Now I'm free, I have means
Won't go back to the jail
No more tenement block
I search for Marie
I can sense she's quite near
We'll pick up where we left off
What I want
They have paid for
What I'll do
They have paid for
Their scheme was nicely timed for me
And now I'm searching for Marie
And now I'm searching for Marie
